Types of Pool Screens [And What To Know Before Buying]

Pool screens are a part of your life If you own a pool in Orlando. One of the best things about being a homeowner is that you can enjoy nature in your own backyard.

While enjoying sunshine, fresh air and splashing in the pool are incredible, there are some aspects of outdoor living that we could do without, including beetles, bees, frogs, spiders, snakes, lizards, mice, mosquitoes, etc.

Finding those in the pool or around your family while trying to enjoy your time outdoors is NOT fun. That’s one reason among many why screen enclosures are so important to have around your pool.

How To Choose Your Pool Screens

If you have a pool enclosure that’s older, or want to build a completely new structure, you’re going to have to decide which pool screen type is best for you.

What to consider when buying Pool Screens for your Pool Enclosure?

There are many things to consider when choosing the best pool screen enclosure.

  1. First, length of time you’re planning on staying in home. You don’t want to invest too much if you’re planning on moving soon, but want to make sure you get a great return on investment if you sell.
  2. Your budget
  3. How heavily your area is populated with bugs, insects or animals
  4. If you have pets
  5. Your lifestyle, such as how often you can realistically clean them

What are the materials being used?

The most common types of base materials being used are fiberglass material and polyester material.

The fiberglass material has a life expectancy of 7 to 9 years and the polyester can last up to 10 years. It is also resistant to drying out from the UV rays and retains its strength longer. So if you want a material that will last long, the polyester material is the best choice. The price typically reflects the increased strength, but it’s well worth it if you’ll be in your home for some time.

Pool Screen Types: What type of Pool Screens are Available?

Fiberglass Window Screen

This is a flexible, economical and easy to install screening. Fiberglass screens don’t crease, dent, or unravel. It is the most commonly used window and door screen for new construction and replacement window screens.

Patio, Porch & Pool Insect Screen

This is a heavy duty fiberglass screen designed for use in pool, patio, porch and sunroom enclosures. It’s increased diameter strand is ideal for larger openings where extra strength is needed on wide spans of screen.

No-See-Um Insect Window Screen

This is a finer mesh fiberglass screen to protect against no-see-um, gnats, sand flies, and other tiny insects common in low marshy and coastal areas.

Florida Glass Screen

This is the same heavy-mesh as Pool & Patio fiberglass screen with the addition of a plastic laminate to protect against the elements. Florida Glass has a smoke haze laminate on the outside so you can’t see in or out. It’s typically on the higher end, but gives you great bang for your buck!

Solar Screen

A Solar screen is a fiberglass screen crafted to block up to 75% of the sun’s rays entering a building. It reduces air conditioning cost and prevents fading of furniture and carpets indoors. This is becoming a really popular option!

Pet Screen

A Pet Screen is substantially stronger and thicker than any of the materials listed above. If you have pets that like to jump on the screen, then you should consider getting a pet screen. If you’re paying good money to replace your pool screen, you want to make sure it holds up well against any of your 4 legged friends.

Finding the ideal mesh for your pool cage or screen enclosure is easy when you consider all of the variables that will affect your enclosure. You will want to keep in mind how long you are planning on living at your home, the amount of tiny bugs you commonly have in your area, how often you plan on cleaning your aluminum frames, and the number of pets you have. All of these variables will play a role in helping you decide what mesh option you will benefit from the most.

Labor: What to Remember [And Avoid] For Installing Pool Screens

Installing enclosures and pool screens is a big task, and it’s important that it’s done correctly. There are a few things you should consider when deciding who does the job (as we don’t recommend you doing it yourself).

  • Find someone who has a long history of quality work
  • Find someone with tons of positive reviews and testimonials – know that others have been happy with their choice, and  you’ll most likely be happy, too!
  • Make sure they are licensed, bonded and insured. Many “chuck in a truck” contractors have no insurance or workers compensation. This means that if they’re hurt on your property (which can happen in this business), YOU are on the hook for their medical bills and lost wages! DO NOT RISK IT! No insurance, no job. Make sure to see the documents in person. Check the expiration date as well.
